Grand Cayman offers several great shore diving opportunities which creates dive opportunities for those snorkelers and divers who choose to go out on the water without a boat. Located in Grand Cayman's George Town, the Sunset House is the ideal setting to experience shore diving and explore the underwater realm. The Sunset House attracts divers with its underwater beauty, 9′ tall bronze mermaid statue and the wreck of the David Nicholson.
The legendary house reef of Sunset House is home to the Cayman Mermaid. Created by Canadian artist Simon Morris, this 9-feet-tall, 600-pound bronze mermaid statue provides a fun backdrop for a great diving experience. Officially named Amphitrite, the bronze statue was placed on the house reef at 55 feet below sea water in October 2000. The Sunset House has another dive attraction – David Nicholson Wreck – which can be easily accessed following a 10-minute swim from the mermaid statue. The David Nicholson is a World War II ship which was purposely sunk to create an artificial reef. Divers can easily find groupers, barracudas, turtles, tall purple finger sponges and a plethora of other fish species while diving the shipwreck site.
